Proofreading and copyediting. They’re similar activities with important distinctions. I define “proofreading” as identifying and correcting errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization and formatting—in essence, the “final set of eyes” part of the creative process before your piece is printed, posted online or read on the air.

“Copyediting” covers the same areas and also includes checking for redundancies, clarity of thought, proper sentence structure, appropriate word choice, proper sequencing in lists and other displayed material, and rewriting small sections of copy to eliminate wordiness, to smooth transitions and to improve readability.
